What Canopi offers
Canopi matches each person to a level of support after a short assessment. The options are:
- Self-help resources through partner organisations.
- Wellbeing Ally support, which pairs you with an experienced peer who understands health and social care work.
- Guided self-help, such as SilverCloud online programmes or CBT guided by a therapist.
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) with an accredited therapist, up to a maximum of eight sessions. Most sessions take place by video or phone, with a small number in person.
- EMDR, which some Canopi therapists introduce, and Canopi can connect you with a therapist who delivers EMDR.
From 21 September 2026, Canopi paused new referrals for therapy, including CBT. Self-referrals and Doctor Advisor appointments continue, so you can still register and talk through your options with a Doctor Advisor. Check the Canopi referral page for the latest position.
Canopi staff, administrators, Doctor Advisors and therapists include Welsh speakers, and all correspondence and support is available in Welsh.
How to self-refer to Canopi
- Complete the online referral form on the Canopi website. The team responds within one working day.
- Fill in the short information form you are sent next.
- Book a telephone appointment with a Doctor Advisor, who helps decide which support fits you.
If you prefer to talk, call 0800 058 2738. The admin team on the helpline can guide you through the process, but they are not mental health professionals, so keep clinical detail for the Doctor Advisor call.
What Canopi does not offer
Canopi lists several services outside its scope:
- counselling, including family, relationship and bereavement counselling
- financial or legal advice
- help with complaints, mediation or advocacy
- urgent or crisis support
For the gaps, other services fit:
- Grief after a patient death or a personal loss: our bereavement guide.
- Money worries: money worries in healthcare work, and Pharmacist Support if you are a pharmacist.
- A dispute, grievance or disciplinary at work: a trade union, or Acas for free employment advice in Wales and England. Our guide to bullying at work covers formal complaints.
- Counselling or peer support by phone for doctors and medical students: the BMA wellbeing line, open 24/7.
Staff outside Wales
Canopi directs staff in England and Scotland to other services. In England, NHS staff can self-refer to NHS Practitioner Health. In Scotland, regulated health and social care professionals can use the Workforce Specialist Service, run by the same Practitioner Health team. See support in England, support in Scotland and support in Northern Ireland for each nation's options, or support in Wales for more Welsh services.
Who Canopi suits
Say a pharmacist in a Cardiff hospital has felt flat and anxious since a run of short-staffed weekends. No crisis, but sleep and concentration are slipping. Canopi fits this picture well: a self-referral on a Monday morning, a reply by Tuesday and a call with a Doctor Advisor. While new therapy referrals are paused, ask the Doctor Advisor which other support fits in the meantime. A care worker in a residential home in Gwynedd can use the same service, in Welsh if preferred.
Canopi is less suited to someone who wants to talk to a counsellor about a bereavement or who needs help with a disciplinary hearing. Read our guides to burnout and sleep and night shifts for self-help alongside Canopi.
Help in a crisis
Canopi is not an emergency service and does not provide urgent or crisis support. If you are in immediate danger, call 999. For urgent mental health help in Wales, call NHS 111 and press 2. Samaritans answer free on 116 123, 24 hours a day. You can also text FRONTLINE to 85258. More numbers are on our urgent support page.
