Workplace pressure

Money worries for healthcare staff

Get advice before the pressure grows

Short answer

Deal with priority bills first, such as rent or mortgage, council tax and energy, and get free debt advice early. Profession charities give grants and help: Pharmacist Support for pharmacists, trainees and students, the RCN Foundation and Cavell Nurses' Trust for nursing staff, and the organisations listed through DoctorsHelp for doctors. In England and Wales, a debt adviser can apply for Breathing Space, which pauses most creditor action for 60 days.

Key facts

Breathing Space
England and Wales. A standard Breathing Space lasts 60 days and pauses most interest, charges and enforcement. A mental health crisis Breathing Space lasts for the length of crisis treatment plus 30 days.
Who applies
A regulated debt adviser applies for a standard Breathing Space. An approved mental health professional must certify crisis treatment for the mental health version.
Statutory Sick Pay
Paid for up to 28 weeks to eligible employees. Since April 2026, SSP has no lower earnings limit.
Scotland and Northern Ireland
Scotland has its own debt relief schemes, and Northern Ireland has separate advice services. Ask a local Citizens Advice for help.

Why money trouble hits health staff

A professional salary does not protect anyone from hardship. Common causes in healthcare include:

  • Long sickness absence, when NHS sick pay drops to half pay or ends.
  • Losing bank or overtime shifts which the household budget relied on.
  • Exam fees, course costs and moves between rotations for trainees.
  • Gaps between locum bookings or a drop in locum rates.
  • A training repayment clause after leaving a job early. See training repayment clauses.
  • Separation, bereavement or caring for a relative.

Steps to take this week

  1. List income and essential costs. Put housing, council tax, energy, food and travel to work first.
  2. Sort debts into priority and non-priority. Priority debts carry the most serious penalties: rent or mortgage arrears, council tax, energy, court fines, child maintenance and tax. Credit cards, overdrafts and personal loans come after.
  3. Get free debt advice. Citizens Advice and other free, regulated debt services can negotiate with creditors and apply for Breathing Space. Avoid paid debt management firms and high-cost credit.
  4. Check your entitlements. Use a benefits calculator on GOV.UK. Check your sick pay, maternity or paternity pay, and any pay owed for unpaid breaks or overtime.
  5. Contact your profession charity. Ask about eligibility and the evidence needed, such as bank statements, a payslip and a list of debts.
  6. Ask HR about employer help. Some NHS employers run hardship funds, salary advances or wellbeing schemes.

Which charity helps which group

  • Pharmacists, trainees, pharmacy students and their families: Pharmacist Support offers financial help, debt advice referrals and wellbeing services. Pharmacy technicians should ask the charity directly whether they qualify.
  • Nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants: the RCN Foundation and Cavell Nurses' Trust give hardship grants. RCN member support includes welfare advice for members.
  • Doctors and medical students: DoctorsHelp lists charities offering grants and advice, such as the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund.
  • Students: your university hardship fund and student support team. Our student stress guide covers study pressures.

Each charity sets its own rules and application process. Pharma Mate does not collect applications, handle money or decide eligibility.

Money and mental health

Debt and poor mental health often feed each other. Tell your GP if money worries affect sleep or mood. If you feel unable to cope, call Samaritans on 116 123 or use our urgent help page. A mental health crisis Breathing Space protects you from creditors while you get treatment.

Common questions

Yes, if you meet the charity's criteria. Pharmacist Support helps pharmacists, trainees and students, the RCN Foundation and Cavell Nurses' Trust help nursing staff, and DoctorsHelp lists charities for doctors.

What is Breathing Space?

Breathing Space is a government debt respite scheme in England and Wales. A debt adviser applies on your behalf, and most creditor action and interest stop for 60 days.

Which debts should I pay first?

Pay priority debts first: rent or mortgage, council tax, energy, court fines, child maintenance and tax. These carry the most serious penalties if unpaid.

Where can I get free debt advice?

Citizens Advice gives free, confidential debt advice across the UK. Free regulated debt charities also help. Avoid firms which charge fees for debt plans.
