Pressures dental teams describe
Many dentists work in small practices with no colleague on hand to talk a case through. Associates are often self-employed, with income tied to the number of treatments completed, and NHS dentists work to contract targets. Practice owners carry business debt, staff costs and the risk of a failed inspection. Many clinicians worry about complaints and GDC referrals for months after an incident.
Dental nurses and other dental care professionals describe low pay, short notice changes to hours and pressure to work beyond their training. Say a dental nurse is asked to carry out a task outside the GDC scope of practice. The nurse can decline, record the request and raise the matter with the practice owner or the GDC.
- Associate agreements and self-employment: read employment status and contract review.
- Clauses limiting where you work after leaving: read restrictive covenants and non-solicitation clauses.
- Working alone: read isolation at work.
- Patient complaints: read complaints.
- Debt and cash flow: read money worries.
Dental helplines and charities
ConfiDental is a listening helpline for dental professionals, staffed by volunteers who are practising or retired dental professionals. The line is open all day, every day, on 0333 987 5158. The GDC lists ConfiDental among the support options for people in its fitness to practise process.
The Dentists' Health Support Trust is an independent charity run by dentists for dentists. The trust gives free, ongoing one-to-one support with wellbeing, mental health and addiction. Call 0207 224 4671 between 7.30am and 10.30pm, any day of the year. The trust's website names dentists, so dental care professionals should ask about eligibility.
The BDA Benevolent Fund helps dentists and dental students facing mental ill health, low income or other hardship. GLADD represents LGBTQ+ dentists and dental students. Doctors in Distress runs group programmes for healthcare workers, and some programmes include dental teams.
Confidential mental health care for dental teams
NHS Practitioner Health names dentists as an eligible group in England, as long as you are registered or seeking registration with the GDC. You register online or by phone on 0300 0303 300, Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm. Read our Practitioner Health profile. In Scotland, the Workforce Specialist Service covers regulated health and social care professionals, which includes dental care professionals. In Wales, Canopi supports NHS and social care staff, though new therapy referrals are paused from 21 September 2026. In Northern Ireland, the GDC lists Lifeline, a 24/7 crisis line, on 0808 808 8000.
The BDA and getting representation
The British Dental Association speaks for dentists and dental students across the UK. BDA members get advice and education, with unlimited one-to-one advice on Extra and Expert membership. For a complaint, a claim or a GDC referral, your indemnity provider or dental defence organisation gives dento-legal advice. Call them as soon as you hear about a complaint, before you reply in writing.
Associates should read an associate agreement before signing, with special care over restrictive covenants and notice terms. Our guides to notice periods and pressure to sign explain what to check.
GDC fitness to practise support
The GDC regulates dentists and dental care professionals: dental nurses, dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians and orthodontic therapists. The GDC does not run its own emotional support service. The regulator's guidance tells you to discuss wellbeing support with your caseworker and lists outside services, including ConfiDental, Samaritans, Practitioner Health, the Dentists' Health Support Trust and the BDA Benevolent Fund.
The GDC says the regulator keeps your health information confidential. If the GDC needs to share health information with a support organisation, the regulator talks to you first. Read investigations at work and fear of seeking help if worry about the GDC is stopping you from getting care.
