Contracts, rights and speaking up

Workplace rights for UK healthcare staff

Every Pharma Mate guide on contracts, whistleblowing and workplace disputes, with support for the effect on your health.

Where this applies

The guides mainly cover England, Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland has separate employment law, industrial tribunals and the Labour Relations Agency in place of Acas. See nidirect workplace guidance (opens another website). General information, not legal advice.

Short answer

Most workplace problems for healthcare staff fall into three groups: a contract question, a concern about patient safety or wrongdoing, and the strain of either one. Get advice on the legal question from Acas, a union or Protect, and separate support for your health. Act early, because most tribunal claims in Great Britain have a time limit of six months less one day for problems on or after 1 October 2026.

Common questions

Where can healthcare workers get free employment advice?

Acas and Citizens Advice give free information in Great Britain, and the Labour Relations Agency in Northern Ireland. Protect gives free whistleblowing advice. Unions and defence bodies, such as the PDA, BMA and RCN, advise members.

How long do I have to make an employment tribunal claim?

For most problems on or after 1 October 2026, six months less one day in England, Wales and Scotland. Earlier problems keep three months less one day. Notify Acas first.

Should I get legal advice or health support first?

Both, at the same time. A legal deadline keeps running while you are unwell, and health support does not need to wait for the legal outcome.
